Sun TV is a regional Tamil language Indian cable television station. It is the flagship channel of the Chennai-based Rs 16000-crore Sun TV Network.It was started and promoted by Kalanithi Maran, It was the first fully privately owned Television channel in India when it emerged in 1993. It is most viewed Tamil TV channel in the world. It remained privately held until 2006 when it was listed on the two main Indian stock exchanges - the National Stock Exchange of India and Bombay Stock Exchange. Kalanithi Maran owns the majority of shares in the company.

Since its inception the Sun Network had the blessing and support of the DMK, in line with the general trend in South India where large media houses are directly or indirectly controlled by political parties. The relationship between the management of Sun Network and the DMK led by Kalaigner.M.Karunanidhi became strained after certain violent events in June 2006 relating to a poll conducted in a leading Tamil daily controlled by the Sun Network. It was only in the early part of 2009 that both parties sorted out their differences.

Zee Tamil is an India-based satellite television channel owned by Zee Entertainment Enterprises, which carries broadcasts in Tamil and other regional languages of India. As well as broadcasting in South Asia, it also reaches audiences in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, East Asia, Australasia and North America. It is a part of the Essel Group.
